Ghent has Bruges' medieval skyline with a working city underneath: a moated castle downtown, van Eyck's Mystic Lamb in its cathedral, canal quays that fill with students at dusk. Grand, alive, and somehow still under-visited.

🏛️ A Little History

In 1400 Ghent was Europe's second-largest city after Paris, rich on wool and rebellion. Its citizens defied counts and emperors alike (Charles V, born here, made them parade in nooses; they wear the 'noose bearers' name proudly).

The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb is history's most-stolen artwork, coveted by Napoleon and Hitler, one panel still missing since 1934, and Gravensteen castle's audio tour, voiced by a local comedian, is genuinely laugh-out-loud famous.

The historic center

The Three Towers Quarter

City hall, belfry and churches stand shoulder to shoulder here. Everything in this section is five minutes' walk from everything else.

The bridge was rebuilt in stone in the early 1900s partly so visitors could take in the towers and the quays in one look. It works.
